Summer 2002 our friend and colleague Michael Brody
from the Montana State University
invited us, three teachers from ECOSYSTEM Field Ecology Center to visit Bozeman (Montana)
and Rocky Mountains nearby. This was not a real expedition, but in Montana we join with
our old friends with whom we feed mosquitoes four years ago during Chusovaya
river expedition (Ural Mountains, Russia).
The main region of our "environmental education expedition" at
this time was Yellowstone National Park, that situated only 50 kilometers from Bozeman,
where both Michael Brody and Montana State University lodged.
The most part of our workshops and discussions during this expedition were conducted
extremely close to Nature - mostly in the hot springs, creeks and rivers !!!
During short breaks between conferences in the river we admired the
beautiful views of the local landscapes. Fortunately it was something to see: boiled water
gushed forth from under the ground, bison crossed the road, grizzly-bears pastured at the
river valleys.
It was very difficult to return to school...
We met our American friends who visited Russia 4 years ago, and they
arranged a short exchange rafting along one of the local rivers. It was approximately the
same, but the water was warm, there were no mosquitoes, no tents, slipping bags, camp fire
and bodyguards. But it was river, mountains and friends !
To have more sensation we climbed on the Rocky Mountains peaks by
cross-country vehicle. It was so pity to travel in the conditioned car instead of hiking
10 hours under the mountain sun with full backpack !
Finally our last workshop we were forced to conduct in the extremely wild
place: no electricity, no computers, just us and mountains !
In spite of all these troubles we finished our expedition successfully - agreed to arrange
next American expedition to Russia next summer.
See you later !
